Hey y'all... if you haven't checked out Marc Cushman's new magnum opus about TOS, I highly recommend it. Volume one has been published, with the later installments due in November 2013 and early 2014. The three volumes together are supposed to run 1,500 oversize pages. I read it and learned tons. My review is here:

I'm just getting into the meat of it now. I'm only up to "The Naked Time", since my reading time has been limited, but my favorite parts are seeing the evolutions of the scripts from story outline to final shooting script. My one criticism ( without having read yours yet ) is that there is a lot of regurgitation of information from other sources; Justman and Solow's book, Shatner's books, Grace Lee Whitney's book, James Doohan's book, Nimoy's books, etc. I understand why the author included these quotations in the relevant places, but sometimes I feel like " I've read this already. Get back to the previously unseen archive stuff".

Still, with so much TOS material on the market over the decades it would probably be impossible to write a new book on the subject without a bit of "Been there, done that", but the new information is so interesting that I'm willing to forgive the repetitiveness of some of the material.

I'm not very familiar with the ST literature out there, apart from Blish's adaptations, so I appreciate his thoroughness. I think there's an element of Cushman curating the material out there and picking the best bits that are supported by the record in the archives which is of value. There are also gaps in the archives that need filling. He also certainly beat the bushes and interviewed a lot of guest stars and technicians for new material, and the quotes he got add color even when they don't add new information (to be expected, since these events were 45+ years ago and I imagine many of these people have been repeating all they can remember at ST conventions for years).

Once upon a time, I was very well versed in Star Trek trivia, but since I have gotten rid of most of my behind-the-scenes books about the show, this looks like a great replacement. It'll be nice to revisit those days; I'm definitely looking forward to reading this. But this reminds me, Wil Wheaton never finished his Star Trek TNG books with his reviews and memories from the show, did he?
